Ragnar Kjartansson’s “Song” at the Museum of Contemporary Art in North Miami features seven video installations as well as the Icelandic artist’s performance piece Oh du holde Kunst!, in which he sings Franz Schubert’s Lieder, An die Musik accompanied by  showgirls and musicians as an ode to the transformative power of music.

“Song,” Kjartansson’s first solo museum exhibition in the U.S., features video installations from 2005 to 2012 that explore extremes of the human condition, from sorrow to happiness, transgression to repentance, all spiced with the artist’s sense of humor and set in such sublime surroundings as Iceland and the Canadian Rocky Mountains.

The installations are repetitive and centered around music and song, which is often in stark contrast to the idyllic surroundings yet somehow always seems perfectly harmonious. Be it the softness and femininity in Song, the rocker edge of The End or the country vibe in The Man, Kjartansson’s video installations juxtapose emotions, music and nature to create art that captures life in all its beauty and all its sadness.
