Curated by Roc Laseca, “Bill Viola: Liber Insularum” includes a collection of works, many of which were created since his last retrospective at the Whitney Museum of American Art in 1997.

“Liber Insularum” is based on The Book of the Islands of the Archipelago by the 15th-century Florentine monk Cristoforo Buondelmonti. This historic text is used as a reference to allude to the spiritual isolation that characterizes our 21st-century global landscape.

Since the 1970s, Viola has addressed human themes such as birth, death, human relations, memory and self-discovery in his videos and installations. In many of his works, he revisits theories, authors and scenes from prior moments in the history of universal art.

One of my favorite works in this exhibition is The Quintet of the Astonished, commissioned by The National Gallery in London and inspired by Hieronymus Bosch. In this video, a group of characters experiences waves of emotion, sensations echoed in the perception of the viewer. Through March 3rd, 2013.
