Arturo Rodríguez’ latest solo show deals with travel and concepts of arrival and departure, literally and metaphorically. The figurative paintings in “Passengers” tell an individual, as well as a collective, story. All pieces are set at airports and examine people coming and going, with each passenger painted as a unique and distinct human being on their own journey.

The Cuban-born, Miami-based Rodríguez also addresses migration and exile. In Passengers IV (2010), a departure display board can be seen with a canceled flight to Ranchuelo, where Rodríguez was born. The canceled flight is no doubt an allusion to the inability of native Cubans to return to their homeland as a result of their exile and evokes the longing that is part of their lives.

Arrivals and departures, reunions and leaving behind loved ones set the scene at airports, which are hubs for people of all countries and cultures. The individuals in Rodríguez’ paintings are multi-ethnic, traveling to or from destinations unknown, on journeys that cross one other but remain separate. The paintings, like real airport experiences, seem private and lonely. Each individual is focused on his or her journey, and the airport is but a quick stop en route, in constant flux and with a continuous stream of new passengers. Through June 6.
