“A Fantastic Journey” is a survey of Wangechi Mutu’s career that includes more than 50 works from the mid-1990s to the present. This selection of her prolific practice gathers diverse media such as collages, drawings, sculptures, installations and performance. The exhibition, curated by Trevor Schoonmaker, includes a new, site-specific mural and a black-box theater projection of her latest video The End of Eating Everything, 2013. The artist’s sketchbook drawings, dating from 1995 to the present, are also on view, revealing fascinating insight into her creative process.

Mutu is one of the most creative and critically engaged contemporary artists. She explores issues related to gender, race and power through the construction of fantastical worlds that populate with an imagery that nourishes from such diverse sources as her African heritage, the high-fashion industry, politics and science fiction.

Females are the protagonists of her works, the vehicle to reflect about such diverse topics as Western stereotypical perceptions of Africa, migration and displacement, banality and exacerbated consumerism. Pieced together with human, animal, machine and monstrous parts, Mutu’s heroines appear as seductive and beautiful as they are critical and disturbing. They rule over otherworldly landscapes that appear both lushly tropical and post-apocalyptic. Through July 6, 2014.
