On view through August 13, 2009
“Leopoldo Romañach and the Cuban Avant-Garde” is the summer exhibition at Pan American Art Projects. The intention behind this show is to explore from a historical point of view the period known as “Las Vanguardias” (The Avant-Garde) in Cuban art. This is an opportunity to see a selection of rare pieces from this period from the gallery’s extensive inventory. The exhibition includes works by Abela, Cundo Bermudez, Roberto Diago, Carlos Enriquez, Victor Manuel, Lam, Amelia Pelaez, Martinez-Pedro, Mariano Rodriguez and Rene Portocarrero. The purpose of this exhibition is to showcase the works of these artists in the context of their contemporaries. Through these pieces people can see their evolution in terms of style and understand the transformation these artists brought to the art of the period. In the project room, a few of Leopoldo Romañach’s paintings are on view, as a tribute to the painter who taught many of these artists while they attended the San Alejandro Academy. Romañach never constrained the freedom that should prevail during creation, something very noteworthy, taking into consideration that he taught at an art academy. Indeed he encouraged his students to find their own way, and as a result many of them have made personal contributions to the history of Cuban art.
The gallery will be closed for summer vacation from August 16 to September 1 and will reopen for our winter season on September 5th with two solo exhibitions: “Gustavo Acosta” and “Carlos Gonzalez.” In these exhibitions both artists’ works are connected to the idea of flying: Gustavo is using it as a concept in his paintings and Carlos is more interested in the actual possibility of flying, translating this interest to his sculptures. Gustavo will be showing his “bird’s eye view” paintings, while Carlos will be presenting his “flying machines.”
