Pan American Art Projects is presenting its first exhibition of the artwork of Luis Cruz Azaceta. The Cuban-American artist has had a long and successful career, and this exhibition, “Trajectories,” marks his return to the Miami art scene.

Azaceta’s paintings, sculptures, and installations contain a fierce combination of personal history and political and social criticism. Over the years, his work has addressed the social effects of the AIDS epidemic, Hurricane Katrina, the Iraq war, and the recent oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico.

In addition to cultural events, the personal and social effects of immigration are also a consistent theme in Azaceta’s work. At the center of “Trajectories” is Hell Act, a piece that ironically depicts a fleet of makeshift rafts aimlessly and helplessly bobbing around like toys in an enormous bath tub.

Azaceta was born in Cuba in 1942. He migrated to the United States in 1960 and studied at the School for Visual Arts in New York City. His work is in the collection of many museums, both nationally and internationally, and he has been the recipient of many grants, including those from the Guggenheim, National Endowment for the Arts, and, in 2009, the Joan Mitchell Foundation.
