Pan American Art Projects brings together the works of the painters Paul Manes and Armando Mariño. Manes was born in Texas and now lives in New York. His paintings focus on the enchantment of everyday objects. From a distance the work appears hyperrealist, but up close expressionistic brushstrokes give way to abstraction. Mariño was born in Cuba and now lives in Spain. His paintings use strong symbols such as the White House and the Lincoln Memorial to satirically discuss petroleum’s impact on daily life.

Concurrently in the project room the gallery is presenting a series of works by Pablo Soria. The Miami-based artist, who was born in Argentina, has created collages that depict nighttime views of bucolic landscapes.

The group exhibition “Denarrations” runs from November 14, 2009 – January 2, 2010. Gerard Mosquera curated the exhibition of seven artists: Rodrigo Facundo of Colombia, Cristina Lucas and Jorge Perianes of Spain, Aernout Mik of Holland, Tracey Snelling and Nina Yuen of the United States, and Vibeke Tandberg of Norway.  The paintings, installations, and video-performance pieces included are intended to subvert narrative conventions.

Mosquera’s guidance as an art critic and curator was seminal during the ‘80s, the period of the Cuban Renaissance in the arts. Most of his curatorial work has been done outside of Cuba, related to museums and institutions worldwide.

“Denarrations” coincides with the Art Basel / Miami Beach fair because, like the fair, it presents important works by major contemporary artists from different parts of the world. This exhibition indicates an expanded direction for Pan American Art Projects. While its principal focus will remain the presentation of artists from the Americas, it will continue to exhibit some of the European artists included in “Denarrations” as well as others from Europe and Asia.
