Organized by the Paul Getty Museum in Los Angeles, the exposition shows a selection of vintage magazine covers and celebrity portraits, some unpublished, by Herb Ritts, who earned a well-deserved place within the tradition of the portrait and the publicity photograph in the United States. Also included is Madonna’s music video Cherish (1989), the first directed by Herb Ritts, who later directed videos for artists like Michael and Janet Jackson, Mariah Carey and Britney Spears.
From the end of the 1960s until his death in 2002 from AIDS, his ability to create photos that transcended the frontier between the artistic and the commercial, was not only an example of the power of his talent and technical abilities, but it also left a distinctive stamp on the relationship between art, popular culture and advertising that followed the birth of the Pop Art movement in the 1960s and the 1970s. Toward the mid-1980s, his unmistakable style, in which he made celebrities appear more human and natural, created a new standard for his contemporaries to follow.
The exposition also highlights how Ritts, as did Robert Mapplethorpe and Bruce Weber, caused a radical change in the treatment of nudes. His strength rested on his ability to capture various angles of the body, creating peaceful, strong compositions, endowed with singular beauty. Through May 19, 2013.
