The first major exhibition of the Italian Rennaisance master Paolo Veronese in more than two decades is on display at the Ringling Museum of Art. The exposition, which incorporates more than 50 pieces, includes masterly altarpieces, paintings and drawings belonging to several of the most important private collections and museums in North America.

The curatorship of this exposition is focused on Veronese’s creative process and the richness and variety of his extensive oeuvre. This artist often repeated themes at different points in his career; hence, the exhibition examines how the artist’s perspective evolved relative to themes such as The Rest on the Flight to Egypt, The Baptism of Christ and The Death of Christ through an extensive variety of pieces of different formats.

Dr. Virginia Brilliant, the Ringling Museum’s curator of European art who also curated this exhibition, says the artist was often not given enough credit for the depth of his works or their meaning. “Yet Veronese is often dismissed as a merely decorative painter, more elegant and ‘happier’ than Titian or Tintoretto. This exhibition hopes to shift this perception and to shed light on Veronese as a masterful, deeply empathetic storyteller and narrative painter whose works were often invested with rich layers of meaning.” Through April 14th, 2013.
