The Museum of Contemporary Art in Jacksonville is presenting an exhibition of well-known Philadelphia-based sculptor Tristin Lowe as part of its Project Atrium series. Lowe shares the sensibility of American artists, such as Tim Hawkinson, Mike Kelley and Paul McCarthy, who create complex sculptural systems through surprisingly simple means.

His works evoke a journey to the shadowy places between the zealous innocence of youth and feelings of absurdity and fatalistic abandonment. His earlier pieces refer to child-like fantasies, exuding humor and a sophisticated attention to the surreal world of dreams. In contrast, his current work, which focuses on outer space, planets, satellites, black holes, gravity and orbital motion, seems more subdued and contemplative, as a yearning to discover our own inner spaces. In pieces such as Lunacy (2010), Lowe covered an inflatable sphere in white felt. The result is a moon that entices visitors to explore the imperfections of its topography from an intimate distance. Gravitating near Lunacy is Visither I (2010), a neon-light sculpture that casts a dusky, purple-blue haze over the moon. The cool electrical quality of this work contrasts with the softer nature of the felt and the warmer glow that bathes the front side of the orb. Through October 28, 2012.
