As part of its Faculty Focus series, the University of Central Florida presents an exhibition of Steven Spencer, a photographer residing in Florida and UCF professor. It includes pieces from two of his series starring the Florida coast: “Six Miles” and “Also Equivalents.”

In “Six Miles” Spencer has recorded the constant changes on the Cocoa Beach coast, a zone where the hand of man has noticeably and continuously modified the landscape, altering the ecosystem and the customs of its inhabitants. The photos of this series call upon us to reflect on our traditional concept of progress, questioning the validity of these constant mutations, a product of human intervention.

“Also Equivalents” is a series of works that displays a kind of impressionist mosaic of the Florida coast. Each of the works reveals the emotions, thoughts and feelings that overwhelmed the photographer when he confronted the landscape at the precise moment that he snapped the photo.

Both series provide an intimate look at a physical space that forms an intrinsic part of the life and history of Steven Spencer.

Through July 28, 2013.
