Stephen Knapp’s “Lightpaintings” expand the concepts of sculpture and light art by blending approaches used in traditional painting with those employed in sculptural aesthetics and technology.
Knapp explores color, light and space as he experiments with the surface conditions and reflective properties of glass and stainless steel to create shadows, textures and layers of color. Each angle, every slight change of perception and each move of the viewer reveals more of the art, additional layers and new patterns.
Of his “lightpainting” process, the artist says, “I separate white light into pure color and paint with light. Each piece has a presence that far exceeds its physical dimensions. Stainless steel grounds the surface and its reflections ground the planes of light.”
The “Lightpaintings” reflect the colors of the rainbow and cast shadows against the walls. Where colors meet, new hues are created, inviting viewers to experience a wonder reminiscent of childhood. Society strips many adults of time for dreams, imagination and introspection. Knapp wants to not only evoke new dreams and aspirations in everyone interacting with his “Lightpaintings,” but rather wants to foster interaction, mutual discovery and, as he says, “a shared journey.” Through June 3.
