“New Work Miami 2013″ is the last exhibition of the Miami Art Museum at its current location before moving to a new building designed by Herzog & de Meuron in autumn. “New Work Miami 2013,” curated by Diana Nawi and René Morales, assembles the work of Gideon Barnett, Bhakti Baxter, Loriel Beltrán, Consuelo Castañeda, Moira Holohan, Sinisa Kukec, Emmett Moore, George Sánchez-Calderón, Tom Scicluna, Odalis Valdivieso and the artists’ collective known as SPRING BREAK. In it, the curators presents the city of Miami as a cultural context, encompassing historic, social and psychological factors and creating a propitious environment for artistic creation, which in turn reveals values determined by its very site specificity and multiculturalism.
The artists brought together in the exhibition present works that cover a wide range of expressive strategies. For example, Consuelo Castañeda and Emmett Moore intervene in the museum space by creating immersive atmospheres that support the discourse suggested by the works of the other participating artists. “New Work” is an indicator of the link between the museum and local artists, and it also expresses the atmosphere of experimentation and mutual collaboration that characterizes local artistic production. Through June 2nd, 2013.
