“The Record: Contemporary Art and Vinyl” at Miami Art Museum (organized by the Nasher Museum of Art at Duke University) is an exhibition of 41 artists who take the vinyl record as their subject and or material in their work. Including artists such as Xaviera Simmons, Laurie Anderson, David Byrne and Dario Robleto, among others, the roster is a strong and thorough collection of international established and emerging artists.

Focusing on the vinyl record in particular makes for a very streamlined, if narrow, examination of the intersection between this moment of music history and contemporary art-culturally, aesthetically, technologically and experimentally. The exhibition  encompasses a variety of approaches and views-though seen as a fairly densely assembled grouping, many of the works seem to fetishize the record where they may not if seen individually or in smaller pairings. Due to this, some subtlety is lost. But as a catalogical survey of this particular subject/medium it is effective, and the strength of individual pieces should not be overlooked. The public has a very common access point, and the record-collecting enthusiast is perhaps the target audience. Through June 10.
