The Museum of Contemporary Art | Jacksonville is launching a solo show by Gainesville-based Margaret Ross Tolbert who, over the past 30 years, has created paintings, drawings and lithographs from studios in the United States, France and Turkey. She has received a host of commissions and residencies in Turkey, Azerbaijan and Oman, where she continues to evolve her Doors series as well as study language and dance from the regions of ancient trade routes.
Ross Tolbert has contemplated the springs of North Florida in this ongoing body of work, in which a paradisiacal presence provides a sense of ideal destination and the exotic in the here-and-now. In “Lost Springs,” she counterpoints the sense of passage, time and journey implicit in her Door paintings, exploring her personal sense of loss as she bemoans the tragic inundation of the Ocklawaha system by the Kirkpatrick Dam. www.mocajacksonville.unf.edu
