By showing some of the most iconic images of popular American culture, Leslie Lew offers a kind of nostalgic voyage through childhood, above all for those who grew up between the 1930s and 1970s. In her works, which go beyond the limits of painting, employing a technique that she calls “sculpted oil paintings,” this artist recreates the comic book covers of America’s most beloved childhood heroes, as well as the packaging and advertising of popular cereals and crackers.
Lew grew up in the suburbs of New York and Chicago in a creative environment influenced by the advertising industry, since her father was a renowned art director. Through her work, Lew examines how taste has developed over generations and how certain products have become cultural icons.
Lew acknowledges three great influences in her work: Peter Max (who had the idea of reaching the viewer through cultural iconography), Andy Warhol (due to his ability to take pop icons and turn them into works of art) and Norman Rockwell (from whom she learned the strategy of reaching the soul of the people by calling upon their childhood memories). So, just as Rockwell created a well-known series of scenes typical of American life, Lew created similar imagery for her Baby Boomer generation.
