Thanks to the current international economic situation, older works by Latin American master artists will be on view in “Joyas Latinoamericanas,” the summer exhibition at ArtSpace/Virginia Miller Galleries.

The exhibition features 1942 and 1970 works by the Cuban master Wifredo Lam, a 1973 oil by the Nicaraguan surrealist Armando Morales, and oils from 1958 and 1970 by Gunther Gerzso, the pioneering Mexican abstractionist.

Major works in the show also include a powerful, 78-inch expressionist canvas of a fighting cock done in 1993 by Arnaldo Roche-Rabell, a leading Puerto Rican painter; a 79-inch oil created in the same year by César Menendez, the renowned surrealist from El Salvador; and four large oils from 1989 -1991 by Elmar Rojas, whose canvases frequently refer to the folklore of his native Guatemala.

Other master works in the show are canvases by two of Brazil’s foremost painters, Antonio Amaral and Siron Franco; a large 1984 oil by the Cuban Gina Pellón; several canvases by Ramón Oviedo, the Dominican Republic’s most significant contemporary artist; and a 1970s work by Francisco Toledo, one of the most important living Mexican artists.

“This year’s strained international economy has a bright side: the sale of long-cherished works of art by private owners offers art lovers an extraordinary opportunity to view older works-considered ‘jewels’-that seldom come on the art market,” noted gallery owner and director Virginia Miller. “Instead of merely selling these, they will be publicly exhibited to enhance the gallery’s annual summer Latin American show of works by leading master and mid-career artists.”
