The Art and Culture Center of Hollywood is presenting “Over My Rainbow,” a mixed-media installation of Cuban-born Juan Erman González that consists of a variety of works that continue his thematic concentration on migration, transculturism, exile and displacement. Using utilitarian methodologies such as assemblage, cut paper, ceramics and sewing, and utilizing post production, and recycled and donated goods, Gonzalez takes us through “Ozlandia” and his personal permutations, observations and adaptations throughout the trip.
In his work, he appropriates methodologies usually associated with “craft,” such as ceramics, woodworking and sewing, but operating from a different ethos than those of traditional practitioners. His intention is to echo and materialize remembrance. His works can be reinstalled as dictated by circumstance, giving place to reinvention, a common practice for an immigrant.
His works are part of the permanent collection of the Pérez Art Museum Miami, as well as many private collections, such as those of Craig Robbins, and Carl and Toni Randolph, among others. “Over My Rainbow” runs through May 25, 2014.
