Miguel Rodez Arts Project Space is presenting “Face to Face” until February 9th. This exhibition explores the self-portrait genre through the work of E.F. “Eddy” Angel, Aleli Egues, Laurence Gartel, Barry Gross, Frank Izquierdo, Pablo Lazo, Rafael López Ramos, Laura Luna, Mano, Orocoro, Jesse Paz, Miguel Rodez, Abdon J. Romero, Jorge Santos, Yampier Sardiña and Fredy Villamil.

The project is curated by the artist Miguel Rodez. Its aim is to revisit a genre that has been present throughout the history of art but bring it into a present-day context, inspired by the teachings of the great masters and in many cases incorporating contemporary themes, techniques and materials.

Perhaps all artists have been attracted to the self-portrait at some point in their career. At times, these explorations are only technical and formal; at others, they constitute true introspective exercises. In “Face to Face,” Pablo Lazo’s work stands out. A classically trained painter, Lazo represented himself in a mannerist posture. In this scene, he holds a puppeteer’s cross bar with strings that extend the physical limits of the painting while suspending a painter’s palette with a wooden marionette. This work seems to create a dichotomy between the purity of the creative process and market demands.
