Norton Museum of Art - West Palm Beach
By Suzanne Cohen
This exposition assembles 39 Annie Leibovitz photographs recently acquired by the Norton Museum of Art. This acquisition enriches the museum’s already-extensive photographic collection, which exceeds 3,000 pieces.
“The photographs we’ve chosen demonstrate the quiet power of the photograph and the vital connection between the artist and the subject-the essential element of all great portraits,” says Charles Stainback, assistant director of the Norton. Stainback worked closely with Leibovitz to narrow the selection to the final 39 photographs, which include a mixture of well-known and lesser-known works that range from the 1970s to the present.
Leibovitz is one of the most notable photographers of our time. She has documented American popular culture since the early 1970s, and her photos have appeared in Rolling Stone, Vanity Fair and Vogue. Many of her photos-such as those she took of John Lennon and Yoko Ono, Whoopi Goldberg and Andy Warhol-are considered iconic images of our time. Through June 9th, 2013.
