The Pérez Art Museum Miami inaugurated its new building with the first retrospective in the United States of Ai Weiwei, one of the most prolific and anti-establishment contemporary Chinese artists. The exhibition covers 20 years of his career through more than 30 large-scale works that cover a wide spectrum of media, including sculpture, installation, video and photography. The exposition presents works that showcase his aesthetic ties to conceptual and minimal art, as well as his manipulations and reinterpretations of everyday objects and materials, creating visual metaphors that question the impact of economic crises on society, repercussions of authoritarian political systems on the future of his country and validity of certain traditional cultural icons in today’s China.

Of note is Jade Handcuffs, which consists of a pair of handcuffs carved in jade utilizing traditional methods and alluding to his own arrest and detention in 2011. The artist was imprisoned for 81 days, and each day he was handcuffed to a chair while being interrogated. This piece represents both a material memory of his own experience and a critique on the lack of freedom of expression. Through March 16, 2014.
