Ruth and Marvin Sackner founded their collection of concrete and visual poetry in 1979. Initially, this “archive of the archives” focused on concrete poetry, but gradually the collection grew to encompass a broad array of historic and contemporary works that synthesize word and image. Today, the archive includes more than 70,000 objects, constituting the largest private collection of language-based art in the world. A selection of this collection was on view until Aug. 3 at Perez Art Museum Miami.

The exhibition included hundreds of objects spanning more than a century of creative expression. Of note was a rare, 1897 publication of “Un Coup de des” (A Throw of the Dice), by Stéphane Mallarmé, which is considered one of the first examples of concrete poetry.

Other areas of interest in this collection rooted in the early- to mid-20th-century European avant-garde are documents that shine a light on the foundational movements of modernism, such as Italian Futurism, Russian Constructivism, Bauhaus, De Stijl, Dada and Lettrisme. Poems, manifests, books, novels and documents by renowned artists and thinkers such as Andre Breton, Guy Debord, Asger Jorn, Alfred Stieglitz, Filippo Tommaso Marinetti, Lucio Fontana, Alexander Rodchenko, Paulo Bruscky, Leon Ferrari, Giacomo Balla, Adrian Piper and Gordon Matta-Clark, among others, were part of this remarkable presentation.
