This amazing presentation features Electric Sheep, a software created in 1999 by Scott Draves. It functions as a form of artificial life that re-creates the biological process of evolution and reproduction through mathematical combinations and genetic algorithms. It is the result of a combination of human intervention and a cyborg mind with 450,000 participant computers and people all over the Internet.

Each participant computer follows mathematical instructions to render its own contribution to the larger work. Each image is sent back to a server that compresses it into abstract animations, called “sheep,” that all participants can see. Then, all participants can vote for their favorite animations to keep the system alive.

Draves is a well-known software artist and inventor whose works have been used for two decades by many other artists and designers. He is also the author of the original Flame algorithm in 1991 and the Bomb visual-musical instrument in 1995. In 1993, he won an honorable mention at Prix Ars Electronica for his Flame algorithm. His work has garnered notice from such competitions as the Genetic and Evolutionary Computation Conference, Montreal; ACA Media Arts Festival, Tokyo; and File Prix Lux in Brazil.
