Ricardo Pascale – Sculptures
Sammer Gallery
Summer 2009
Sammer Gallery presents a solo exhibition of the distinguished Uruguyan sculptor, Ricardo Pascale (Montevideo, 1942). Pascale became involved with the plastic arts at an early age, as a student of drawing and painting. In 1989 he entered the Centro de Expresión Plástica directed by Nelson Ramos, where he studied for several years. Gradually he progressed from drawing to collage, to oils, to acrylics, but it is through sculpture that his work reached its creative peak.
His whimsically shaped sculptures, obtained from a complex collage of pieces of hard wood, are reminiscent of totems and wheels. The use of this type of material impedes the design of intricate forms and demands austerity at the moment of creation. It is for this reason that the artist relies on a collage of several types of wood, obtaining, as a result, entities of singular beauty containing diverse energies and fragments of history.
