“Raúl Cañibano: La isla re-tratada (1992-2012)” gathers together approximately 80 photos by this artist, one of the most prolific documentarians of the 1990s generation in Cuba. The exhibition gathers together four of the main series by this author: Tierra Guajira, Crónicas de la ciudad, Fé por San Lázaro and Ocaso.
The value of Raúl Cañibano’s oeuvre can be found in his ability to immortalize the common man in his daily life and in his moments of leisure. In contrast to the epic photography of the 1970s and 1980s in Cuba, in which man is presented as a social being constructing the socialist project, Cañibano chooses to capture those instants in which the protagonists of his photos simply live and interact among themselves.
The series Tierra Guajira, Fé por San Lázaro and Ocaso provide a look at Cuban society focusing on such recognizable segments as: rural life, religious beliefs and the elderly abandoned to fate in a country where they were unable to reach the much sought-after ideal of socialist progress. In Crónicas de la ciudad he captures iconic places within the urban framework that deteriorate, survive, transform and constantly mutate in a city where life is abuzz.
