Although captured through more classical painting in the 18thcentury, I hadn’t seen this critically revisited through painting in American art in the 20thor 21stcentury. To me, it crossed over contemporary and historic cultural positions, ones that have always been a traditional move towards independence and justice in American as well as other cultures.
