QUARANTINE DIARIES. Francie Bishop Good
The virus and all the uncertainty surrounding it is a weight that stays with me. I’m certain it has affected my work. My attitude, my tension, my frustrations and fears affect how my hands interact with clay, with paint, and how my eye sees form and color. But I am also grateful for being fortunate enough to have this extended time to work, to experiment and to develop my art.
I started working in sculpture almost as art therapy. I deliberately picked clay, where I am untrained, and where I had no guidance except my evolving aesthetic. The learning curve is steep. Yet I have always loved the innocence of outsider art. I use synthetic polymer paints on my painting and bisque-fired earthenware sculpture. My work is built up and glued together without plans. I work in the here and now and allow the works to talk to me. I allow my paintings to pair with my sculpture.

I am currently exhibiting at Mindy Solomon Gallery, and that experience has challenged me and encouraged my practice. My friends always joked with me that my work reproduces itself at night. Hence in this pandemic I am over-zealous and my work is taking over my house. The pandemic, for all its awfulness, has given me the gift of time for work and reflection.
