Edison Peñafiel is a multidisciplinary artist who lives and works in South Florida.

Land Escape [Paintings] is a project I have been working on during these times of isolation. The project was awarded the Knight Art Challenge 2019 grant to produce a series of large-scale compositions focused on migrants’ physical and emotional struggles through their journeys. Land Escape is tied to issues of the ever-growing migrant community and their stories as documented or undocumented migrants. The current state of the world with closed borders and collapsing economies will bring with it a massive influx of people from the global South into the more stable northern economic powers. Land Escape seeks to open the dialogue on who are these migrants, why do they leave their homes to embark in perilous and often deadly journeys, what conditions do they encounter, what contributions and problems do they bring with them?.

South Florida, being one of the entry points to the country, is directly affected by all these issues. As national elections are coming, and regardless of political affiliations, we all will need to make informed decisions around this theme.
