Baker Sponder Gallery is presenting an exhibition of sculptures by Dallas-born artist Peter Reginato. In his works, Reginato re-creates the 20th-century avant-garde’s exuberance and desire for play and experimentation. They are reminiscent of some of the works of Picasso, the lyricism of Kandinsky, the cutouts of Matisse and the amusing forms of Miró, though they also draw connections to the legacies of Anthony Caro and David Smith.

This collection of pieces that expresses energy and dynamism reflects an artist sensitive to his surroundings. In spite of being abstract, the pieces echo the problems and phenomena of our time. This is made manifest in the titles of some of them, including The New Normal, False Surrender and Bad Seed.

Reginato’s works can be found in the collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, The Museum of Fine Arts in Houston, the Hirshhorn Museum in Washington, D.C., and the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, among other institutions.  Through February 13th, 2013.
