This exhibition gathers together the works of 71 artists, 50 Latin American and 21 American, in the halls of the Lowe Museum of Art. Through 75 pieces, created between 1919 and 1979, it explores how artists from Latin America and North America embraced the codes of modernism. The exhibition demonstrates that more than a transmission of codes or imposition of stylistic canons, what occurred in this part of the world was the application of modernist codes, adapting them to the necessities and artistic tradition of each historic and social context, giving rise to a new language. Among the noteworthy artists included in this exhibition are: Eduardo Abela, Wifredo Lam, Fernando Botero, Man Ray, Amelia Peláez, Manuel Alvarez Bravo, Adolph Gottlieb, Jacob Lawrence, Hans Hofmann, Gordon Matta-Clark, and Roberto Matta.

“Pan American Modernism” clearly demonstrates the aesthetic dialogue among diverse movements and creators: Cuban avant-garde, Mexican muralism, American abstract expressionism, among others. Also explored is the impact of geometric abstraction, a tendency that left an important legacy in South America, as well as an influence on movements like Constructivism, Minimalism and Op Art. “Pan American Modernism” is without a doubt one of the most recommended exhibitions of the summer. Through October 13, 2013.
