An exhibition of Gareth Mason, one of the most prominent UK ceramists opened at the Mindy Solomon Gallery in St Petersburg. The characteristic that sets Mason’s work apart is that the piece is not finished when it comes out of the kiln. The artist continues experimenting ad infinitum on the surface, which acquires its own form and character. Each piece is different, a product of the work process and of the specific circumstances that give rise to it. Each of his works is like a little cosmic explosion that in itself captures the mysteries of creation.
A piece can take years to finish. Perhaps it will go through the fire several times, perhaps it will receive various coats of glaze and perhaps the artist will enrich it with multiple objects and elements, very often alien to those traditionally used by a ceramist. Mason comments in this respect: “The material alchemy of ceramics is both my inheritance and playground. I embrace it wholly. I will never seek to tame the dragon; rather, I work to earn its indulgence.”
