This exhibition is the largest museum show of Jill Cannady, one of the Florida’s most recognized artists. The exhibition filled all galleries at the Museum of Art-Deland and includes a vast selection of pieces from different stages of her career. Cannady stands out not only for her extraordinary body of works, but also for being a legitimate contributor to the national art scene in the 1970s and 80s. In “Idea & Medium,” Cannady deals with human and animal figures as allegories of mankind’s dreams, aspirations, moods and metaphysical concerns. Her works challenge the viewer to reflect about his own life experiences to interpret the messages the artist wants to transmit through each scene.

These works emerge from her fascination with the relationship between people and animals. She is particularly interested in converging the expressiveness of women’s faces with the symbolic representations of animals depicted in different situations. She creates her own mythic women, expressing moral qualities that are not evident at first sight. None of her works are portraits; instead, they have been assembled from faces she has seen and acquire a dramatic connotation in her compositions. Through May 11, 2014.
