James Verbicky: Iconicity
Coral Springs Museum of Art
By Denise Colson
Canadian-born James Verbicky stimulates our perception with both the content and texture of his mixed-media collages, currently on view at Coral Springs Museum of Art. Abstraction, Pop art and Op art cross paths in his delicate “media paintings,” as he calls them. These three-dimensional surfaces transcend traditional painting’s limits and expand into the realm of sculpture. They offer us a subtle and suggestive imagery that is the result of decades of researching and collecting vintage media, advertisements and obsolete branding materials.
