Inspired by the human fascination for beds, Leah Poller began her “101 Beds” series 12 years ago. In her series, beds are both windows to each person’s intimate universe and metaphors to those everyday episodes that challenge our lives. Poller reflects about the fact that a third of our lives takes place in a bed, sleeping, dreaming, laughing, loving. Beds are scenarios of essential events in human life.

This exhibition at Lelia Mordoch Gallery presented 28 works influenced by surrealism that combine both her own experiences and the collective imagination of the human race. Poller uses bronze cast sculptures and found objects to create visual metaphors that through a good sense of humor and creativity refer to common worries that affect human beings in our contemporary society, worries related to politics, as well as historical and social issues. Most impressive were such works as Bug Bed, a bronze bed cast as a beetle and covered by domestic bugs; Army Bed, a military tank transformed into a bed; and The Cactus Bed, in which the artist gathers hundreds of real cactus plants to construct a life-size bed that at once fascinates with its inner beauty and repels with its aggressive appearance. Poller’s exhibition was a success, both provoking the viewer and offering a new way to look at common objects.
