This exposition explores the natural world through the works in crystal by sculptor Kathleen Elliot, which she calls “imaginary botanicals,” and the enormous naturalist drawings of Huguette Despault May, created in charcoal on paper, which form part of her “Hawser Series.”

Elliot’s glass sculptures travel from a visual vocabulary rich in forms accurately taken from nature to a surreal universe in which plants are fused with human forms, thus creating an alternative reality that at times appears possible. For her part, Despault May creates images from knotted or twisted ropes, forms that appear humanized in order to express the latent tension in the relationship between the body and mind, between desire and possibility. “These surrogate ‘bodies’ seemed fitting metaphors for the tension, frayed nerves and entanglements that we inevitably experience as human beings,” Eliot said of the recurring motifs in her work. Both artistic proposals embrace a distinctive aesthetic that explores the sensuality percolating in the imperceptible relationships among forms, artistic media, materials and textures. Through February 12, 2014.
