Independent of the achievements of the women’s liberation movement, there still exists a view of a woman as a utilitarian being, a being that fulfills the function of procreating and caring for the family, and who in addition should fulfill the ideal of beauty and behavior that responds to male chauvinist codes. As women have advanced in their struggle for greater civil rights, there is greater pressure on them to submit themselves to an enslaving standard of beauty that reaffirms the balance of power between the sexes. The accepted norm is thin, young and perfect beauty, no matter the risks of achieving it. Our consumer society and the advertising that bombards us with images on a daily basis reaffirm this ideal and the woman succumbs in her fight to achieve it.
