By Denise Colson
The Bass Museum is presenting an exhibition of the Eve Sussman and Rufus Corporation, the collective made up of artists, musicians and performers that this video art artist founded in 2003. Sussman and Rufus Corporation gained international renown in 2004 by presenting as part of the Whitney Biennial the video 89 Seconds at Alcazar, which produced a meticulous reconstruction of Las Meninas (1656) by Velásquez (by building a set and presenting a plot with live actors). It is precisely this interest in revisiting, deconstructing and updating iconic works from the history of art that has been one of the hallmarks of the work of this artist; she takes advantage of these resources to address contemporary social issues: loneliness, the crisis of values, the death of Utopia, the invasion of individual privacy by government-installed surveillance systems, the manipulated image of women and the violation of their rights, among many other themes. In addition to 89 Seconds at Alcazar (2003), other videos presented include: Rape of the Sabine Women (2004), Yuri’s Office (2009) and whiteonwhite:algorithmicnoir (2011). Through November 3, 2013.
