“Duchamp Family of Artists” was organized by The Baker Museum with the collaboration of Francis Naumann, a scholar of the oeuvre of Marcel Duchamp. It assembles approximately 100 pieces, a third of which were created by Duchamp, most notably one of his boîtes-en-valise. The works come from several private collections and those of the Ringling Museum of Art, Philadelphia Museum of Art and Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden.

The exhibition is a glimpse into the creative environment of the Duchamp family. Alongside the works of Marcel are pieces by his siblings who made significant contributions to 20th-century art: Jacques Villon (Gaston Duchamp), Raymond Duchamp-Villon and Suzanne Duchamp. Also included are works by his maternal grandfather, Émile Frédéric Nicolle, a successful businessman who was also an accomplished artist and engraver, whose illustrations appeared in numerous publications at the end of the 19th century. The exhibition is completed with pieces by Jean Crotti, an artist with whom Marcel shared his New York studio and who was his sister Suzanne’s second husband.

The value of this exposition lies in highlighting the fact that the Duchamps’ cultural environment represented a fertile breeding ground that doubtless contributed to revolutionizing modern art and laying the foundations of contemporary art. Through April 6, 2014.
