Cuban painter Rafael Soriano (1920-2015) was a master of geometric abstraction and an acclaimed figure in the 20th-century art world. The Frost Museum of Art opens on November 4 “The Artist as Mystic,” a show that features more than ninety paintings, pastels, and drawings. The works come from the Rafael Soriano Family Collection, Smithsonian American Art Museum, Art Museum of the Americas, and Long Beach Museum of Art as well as other collections. The exhibition begins with Soriano’s works in the Cuban geometric abstract style. It then moves to his transitional, experimental paintings from the 1960s and 1970s reminiscent of surrealist biomorphism, and concludes with luminous, mystical imagery in paintings from his mature period. Through January 28, 2018. www.thefrost.fiu.edu.
