Meredyth Sparks’ exhibition “So I will let it alone and talk about the house” at Locust Projects isolates and examines domestic scenes, objects and materials with a self-evident preoccupation with form and design. Photographic collages, assemblages, cut-photo and string-rendered sculptural installations and video work together in the space to create an abstracted implied domestic setting that seems to quietly point to the labor, materials and mood rather than a real sense of place. Vacant and nonspecific, the mixture of patterned fabric, texture and structure create a loose narrative that does not appear committed to any one location-vaguely recalling Diane Keaton’s photographs of hotel lobbies. Because of the generic feeling of many of the pieces, there is a minor struggle between the nonspecific and the particular in a couple of the works. The clean-lined string installation re-creates modernist designer and architect Eileen Gray Rivoli’s tea table” at an architectural human scale, and the multi-paneled screen installation in the center layers images from Bette Midler’s early performances onto the structure of the lattice.

Whether a nod to the home space of the former or the hyper-feminine of the other, this imposition of gender and reference doesn’t hurt the work but feels perhaps unresolved. Through June 23.
