Brazilian Laura Vinci presents her first solo exhibition in the United States. Curated by Elizabeth Cerejido, “Untitled,” from the series Papèis Avulsos, was created based on the concept of chaos. For Vinci, chaos is the energy that sparks change. “There is a feeling of forces and energies moving all of us,” she explains. “The work itself breathes with latent pulsations. There is a sense of imminence, a looming presence of events that await us all, an ever-present combustible element.” Vinci’s work are characterized by changes, transitions, mutations and metamorphoses of elements and materials.

Her exhibition at ArtCenter South Florida includes four installations that interact with architecture, space and light. My favorite is an installation comprised of white sheets of Japanese cotton paper that are suspended from the ceiling. Vinci conceived this piece while working as a set designer on an adaptation of a Chekhov play that included a scene in which a fan spewed papers all over the room. She reenacts in this installation the atmosphere of arbitrariness of that scene. At ArtCenter South Florida, the papers seem to breathe in the air, recalling a serene tension between chaos and order.
