The solo exhibition “This Sharp World” features an amalgam of laborious works by Kate Kretz. Her astonishing embroidery using human hair dominate the show, and one of the themes, motherhood, combined with this technique is a window into the heart of the artist.

Decades of Dreaming of You… (2012) is in the center of the room on a pedestal under plexiglass. The small nest of Kretz’ hair, collected during her pregnancy, is beautifully embroidered with the title’s words. A perfectly shaped white egg rests inside, crafted from white pillowcase thread, and it is obvious that the direction of each wrapped thread is obsessively intentional.

“Many years ago, when I was very young, I terminated a pregnancy,” Kretz confesses. “Decades later, at the last possible biological minute, I gave birth to my daughter. This piece was made to mark the completion of this cycle in my life.”

Also included are silverpoint drawings on found objects and works from a series called Guardian Angels Who Don‘t Come Through. The congruence of the collection is not easily apparent; supportive artist statements and the use of text in the compositions reveal the common overall introspective nature of the work.
