Domestic interiors are the protagonists in Avi Gupta’s recent works. These series revisit absence and presence as themes that the artist has worked with in the past. He captured images of found situations taken in his private space while reflecting on how home can be both a familiar and alienating place at the same time. People are not present in these photographs, but human presence is suggested through their possessions left behind, anthropomorphized objects and scenes that personify the animate.

Gupta works and resides in Washington, D.C. His images have appeared in major publications such as The Washington Post and The New York Times, and have been exhibited across the U.S., including the Corcoran Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., and the Leroy Neiman Gallery at Columbia University in New York. His last body of work, “There Is Here,” was commissioned for a solo show by the Sainsbury Centre for Visual Arts at East Anglia University and is currently on tour in the U.K. His work is part of the permanent collection of the Library of Congress in Washington, D.C.

The works of “In One’s Element” are a pretext to reflect on the human condition, on loneliness as a kind of virus disseminated in America, and the symbolism of objects in everyday life. Through June 2, 2014.
